Burglars struck at a jewellery shop in Abdullapurmet within the Hayathnagar police station limits in the early hours of Sunday and made away with silver articles worth over Rs. 2 lakh.
The thieves entered Laxmi Jewellery and Pawn Brokers’ Shop by drilling a hole through the rear wall. They also made a vain bid to open the locker using gas cutters but ran short of gas in the two cylinders. The burglars left the equipment inside the shop and made away with more than 2 kilograms of silver articles.
The burglary came to light when Sumer, a worker at the shop, opened the shop in the morning. He immediately called his employer Ganapathi Chowdhary who alerted police. According to police, the offenders took advantage of the construction work in progress behind the shop and drilled the hole using a hand driller and removed the bricks. Hayathnagar Inspector G. Srinivas Kumar said that at least four persons could have been involved in the burglary. Surveillance cameras at the shop captured images, but the visuals were not clear enough to identify the intruders. Efforts are on to develop the images, he explained.
Clues team and fingerprint experts were pressed into service to collect evidence from the spot. Officials are not ruling out the role of the gang that struck at a jewellery shop at Bhagyanagar in the KPHB Colony in the first week of April. Burglars had then attempted to loot the shop by drilling a hole through the wall but fled as the security alarm went off.
