The Sub-Inspector of Shabad police station in Ranga Reddy district, Satyanarayana, accused of taking Rs. 1 lakh bribe from a real estate agent after promising him to secure a firearm licence, was suspended by the police higher-ups on Thursday.
A constable of the same police station, Ravi Kumar, too was suspended for allegedly aiding the SI. According to Chevella DSP Ch. Sridhar, the SI demanded money from Venkataiah of Nagarguda village in Shabad when he applied for a weapon licence.
To escape the attention of his superiors and to evade the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials, the SI asked Venkataiah to deposit the sum in the constable’s bank account. “Venkataiah deposited a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh in the constable’s account, who later withdrew the amount and handed it over to the SI,” the DSP said.
However, Venkataiah’s application was rejected by the then DSP.
“As his application was rejected, Venkataiah asked the SI to return the money and this created a rift between the two,” the DSP said.
The agent petitioned senior police officers in the district alleging that the SI had taken money from him and disclosed the bank transaction details.
A departmental probe confirmed the ‘deal’ between the SI and Venkataiah.
Based on the evidence and call data record of the constable, the authorities suspended the SI and the constable.
