Sewer leakage in Madhapur to be fixed

New pipelines to be laid, road to be restored

For years, overflowing drain has been a common sight in the Patrika Nagar locality of Huda Techno Enclave in Madhapur. Right in front of a private hospital, the sewage water could be seen stagnated causing inconvenience to the patients.

For residents, it was a nightmarish experience during monsoon or whenever there is a heavy downpour. While the flowing drainage makes it tough for the commuters and pedestrians to walk through the bylanes of the busy locality, the continuous overflow of the waste water has also led to the deterioration of the roads. “The issue is addressed on a temporary basis whenever we lodge complaint,” said a resident of the locality.

“If the GHMC or Water Board officials do not respond, we are forced to engage private workers to clear the clogged drains. The foul smell emanating from the overflowing manholes is making our life miserable, ” he added.

The GHMC finally seems to have taken notice of the issue. Instead of Hyderabad Water Board, the GHMC will spend more than ₹ 1 crore to fix the problem by laying new pipelines. According to the civic body officials, the there are too many connections in the locality because of which drainage is continuously overflowing.

“We are remodelling the drainage by replacing the existing 350 mm pipes with 2 feet pipes,” said Mohan Reddy, GHMC Executive Engineer. “The waste from nearby commercial buildings and residences are flowing through these lines. The problem will be solved soon,” he hoped.

The cost of laying new sewage lines is ₹ 64 lakh while for restoring the damaged road, it is ₹ 48 lakh. A new 950 mm pipeline will be laid soon in Patrika Nagar and the works are expected to be completed within two weeks time. The officials estimate that in next two months, the project will be completed.
