Questions, buzzers and unbridled excitement marked The Hindu’s Young World Quiz - 2014 on Monday, which saw nearly 800 schoolchildren vie for the coveted title of city champions.
The sub-junior (classes 3 to 5) category saw 140 teams, with each team comprising two students, while the junior (classes 6 to 8) category had 250 participating teams from the city and other areas of Telangana.
The sub-junior quiz kick-started with a preliminary round comprising 25 questions that kept children glued to their writing pads. Six top-performing teams in prelims were selected for the final where The Hindu quizmaster V.V. Ramanan tested participants’ quick thinking and reflexes on the buzzer.
Sanghamitra Public School’s P. Adithya Sai and H. Aravind beat other teams with a huge margin to win the quiz, which completed 15 years.
The junior category competition followed a similar format, but saw nearly 500 students participate. Entry into the final round was decided by tie-breaker as many teams nearly qualified. In the final round, P. Vikram and Rajkumar, class 8 students from St. Paul's School, Huzoorabad, Kodad, emerged winners.
While winners’ walked away with bicycles as prize, other finalists and all the participants received goodies for their effort. Additionally, the children were elated were they got to meet badminton ace P.V. Sindhu, who was the chief guest for the prize distribution. The sports personality obliged dozens of students, who thronged her for autographs and selfies!
