SCB focuses on green spaces

Board mulling setting up gym parks

December 25, 2014 11:51 pm | Updated 11:51 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

To address persistent demands for accessible green spaces in its area, Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) is set to take up major park development works next year.

SCB currently has four large parks of which the eight-acre Bolarum Park has received more attention than others, ever since Indian government’s Swachh Bharat drive was launched earlier this year.

The park was planned many years ago but its development process crawled until recently.

In the last one month alone, play equipment was installed, lawns cleaned and connecting interior roads paved, at the cost of Rs. 10 lakh. According to official claims, the park now sees around 300 visitors everyday.

When asked about park development works, SCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sujatha Gupta said it was on the agenda.

Fencing work

“Park is a focus area for us. Besides taking up work at Bolarum Park we have also started fencing areas in colonies to create green spaces. Nearly 40 percent of that is done,” she said adding that SCB is contemplating setting up gym parks.

There are nearly 100 such neighbourhood parks in SCB’s 150 colonies. Ms. Gupta also said pending improvement o f Picket Gardens, next to Jubilee Bus Station, has been put on hold due to metro development works.

An SCB engineering official explained that boundaries for the park have to be erected on two of its sides before it could be improved. Pending metro rail development works, SCB cannot finalize boundaries.

Pending works

When asked about the long pending development of Ramanakunta Tank into mini Hussainsagar in Hasmathpet, the official requesting anonymity said the work is likely to be taken up after elections. Waste entering the lake has to be diverted and the lake bed has to be de-silted.

SCB plans to develop greenery along the bund for recreation.
