The GHMC on Sunday reviewed the fallout of the contract workers’ strike and proposed invoking provisions of Essential Services Maintenance Act (Esma) if sanitation efforts of the civic body were obstructed.

At a meeting on the second day of the strike which affected sanitation works in the city badly, Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain, along with floor leaders of different parties and Commissioner Somesh Kumar, appealed to the workers to return to duties immediately.

The joint appeal cited the inconvenience caused to the citizens and health risks as roads are not being swept and garbage is not being lifted in the city. All the business establishments and shops were also requested not to litter garbage and other waste material on the roads.

Mr. Somesh Kumar said that one vehicle per ward has been engaged to clear garbage on war-footing. The sanitary field assistants and drivers were directed to report to duty at once or face serious disciplinary action, according to a press release.
