Seeking to curb irregularities associated with its fleet of vehicles engaged in lifting and transportation of garbage, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to handover maintenance and repairs of these vehicles to the Road Transport Corporation (RTC).
The GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer B.Janardhan Reddy on Friday said the move at having transparency in maintenance of the fleet has been cleared by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and necessary instructions have been issued already.
The GHMC and RTC would soon have a coordination meeting to finalise the related issues.
Measures were also being taken on curbing irregularities in issue of diesel coupons in the transport wing and an online system has been put in place.
Dr. Reddy said the move has started to yield results with about 4,000 litres of diesel saved every day, saving about Rs.60 lakh per month for the civic body.
A fleet of 500 vehicles including dumper bins, JCBs and lorries were engaged in the exercise of lifting and shifting garbage of which 200 are more than 15 years old. These old vehicles would be removed from the fleet once the new auto-tippers are introduced in the coming days, he added.
