Readers respond to The Hindu article

In response to the article Why is this barricade still here? (May 24, 2014), several readers have posted on The Hindu ’s Facebook page and on Twitter, their views on the retention of security barricades in front of the Chief Minister’s Camp Office at Begumpet.

Remove the eyesore

The barricade has not only been an eyesore but also a big traffic bottleneck for commuters. The CM’s office already had multi-layered security with 20-feet high walls, electrified fence, 24-hour manned security towers, speed breaker with spikes to deflate tyres, barricades, etc. Where, then, was the need for installing this high barricade?

It is such a relief that no one is going to occupy the premises. A unilateral decision by the government to construct this barricade with utter disregard to the needs of the road traffic conditions was not at all proper, whatever the security needs of the CM might have been.

They serve no purpose

Barricades in front of the CM camp office and those near the Assembly are not people-friendly. They add to the woes of both pedestrians and commuters. Do we really need such barricades that serve no purpose? How do they help ease traffic in such road stretches where the traffic is heavy?

Even if the Camp Office is used for either of the Chief Ministers, the barricades are not at all needed because they literally eat away 40 per cent of the road, leaving very little for vehicular traffic. This is leading to traffic snarls during peak hours. Authorities should do away with such barricades and help regularise the traffic.

It might impede the CM himself

While the CM office barricade is a big hindrance for the smooth flow of traffic, I also feel that when Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao occupies the Kundanbagh Camp Office, then the one at Begumpet could be a big roadblock for his own cavalcade. When the general public suffered for years due to the barricade, the authorities did nothing. Now, if the barricade hinders the CM’s cavalcade, it is bound to be removed. The authorities should seriously think of removing this barricade, which is of no use for anybody.
