Flawed design: Water logging in Ramnagar locality due to unscientific construction of side drains in Karimnagar on Tuesday.

Unscientific execution of beautification of the R&B main roads measuring 14.5 kilometers in the town is drawing flak from the people in general and the opposition parties in particular.

The work execution has remained incomplete in spite of the project being taking up three years ago. With the arrival of monsoon, water logging on all the R&B roads in Ramnagar locality, Mission Hospital road, Inspection Bungalow and other places has shocked people. The reason for the water logging is said to be improper construction of side drains as part of laying the R&B roads.

The authorities have constructed the side drains higher than the roads forcing the rain water to remain on the main carriageway. Irked by the rain water logging, the locals broke the side drains to let off the rain water for smooth flow of vehicular traffic on Monday.

The residents complained that the R&B authorities had literally caused more damage to the roads with poor quality of side drains that lack ducts and tiles. The road dividers were also of poor quality, the locals complained.

Congress corporator Gandhe Madhavi alleged that the side drains were constructed without using steel. “They should be constructed with openings at every 10 meters to remove the silt etc. But, the norm was not followed”, she said and flayed the authorities poor quality of project execution.

Lok Satta district president N. Srinivas said that the executing agency should have completed the road work before the onset of monsoon, but the roads works were incomplete. The Government should initiate action against the executing agency for not following the norms in the beautification project, he said.

The municipal authorities said that they were writing to the R&B authorities on a regular basis to coordinate with them for taking up the work, but in vain.
