To bring policing on par with its neighbouringcounterpart – Hyderabad – Ranga Reddy district police administration has proposed introduction of traffic policing and intelligence gathering, besides connecting with denizens through social media.
The need for the traffic police stations has long been felt given the ever increasing traffic density and pedestrian flow.
The day-to-day traffic management job is handled by law and order policemen in the districts. Two State Highways (SH) no. 4 and 23 also pass through the district covering about 108 kilometres.
Another 964 km of roads are arterial roads. Road discipline has become the need of the hour given that these roads witness road accidents and deaths.
“This year, there were 31 road accidents reported and 16 deaths. Road discipline will henceforth be strictly implemented and road safety awareness programmes are also being planned,” Rama Rajeshwari, who recently took over as Superintendent of Police in Ranga Reddy district, said.
To have its ears on the ground and gather intelligence, the district police administration has proposed revival of the Village Police Officer (VPO) system.
“It is difficult for a Station House Officer to personally visit every village and interact with the locals regularly. A constable and head constable will be made responsible for one or two villages and he will regularly visit and interact with the community and improve public-police relation. He will also collect intelligence,” Ms. Rajeshwari explained.
The police also plan to start a child safety campaign in the district in coordination with the Child Welfare Committee, District Child Protection Unit, Juvenile Justice Board and Integrated Child Development Society.
A series of training programmes in ‘predictive policing’, women and child sensitisation, Village Police Officer (VPO) systems and cyber crime will be organised for the police personnel soon.
