A 30-year-old prisoner at the open-air prison facility in Nalgonda escaped on Tuesday night, the prison officer reported on Wednesday.

M. Shiva Krishna, convicted for life in 2012 in Mahabubnagar was initially sent to Cherlapally prison, Hyderabad as punishment. Following his good conduct and after establishing trust, he was recommended for serving the remaining sentence in an open setting in Cherlapally, Deputy Superintendent of the district jail Srinivas said.

Shiva Krishna was later transferred to Nalgonda district jail in September 2017 and he was continued in the open-air prison here — fuel filling station and inmate-made products outlet — an undertaking of the Telangana Prisons Department attached to the jail premises.

On Tuesday at around 9 p.m. Shiva Krishna reportedly went missing, along with the sales collection of about ₹ 25,000, the officials said.

Several teams, including from the police department, have already been deployed to the fugitive’s native place in Mahabubnagar, and other places.
