Poor response to ‘Kalyana Laxmi’ attributed to lack of publicity

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:38 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Minister for Tribal Development A. Chandulal said that lack of publicity was the reason for poor response to ‘Kalyana Laxmi’ scheme under which the government provides an assistance of Rs. 51,000 for marriage of girls from poor families.

Only 408 applications were received from tribal families so far seeking financial assistance under the scheme, the Minister told reporters here on Friday. Of them, the government has cleared 23 applications, including 11 from Medak, 6 from Nalgonda, 5 from Nizamabad and one from Karimnagar. Ministers belonging to the concerned district will handover the cheques by attending the weddings, whenever they are held, he said.

If the families applying for assistance were in dire need of money, the government was ready to provide it 10 days before the wedding, Mr. Chandulal stated. The government has already sanctioned Rs. 2 crore each for all districts under the scheme.

Mr. Chandulal said the government would launch publicity programmes for the scheme on a large scale from January 27 by involving the Tribal Welfare Department. He said the government has also sanctioned Rs. 10 lakh each for districts for birth anniversary celebrations of Sevalal Maharaj.
