With the aim to ensure that the footage obtained from closed circuit cameras stand as valid evidence in courts and results in conviction of the offenders, the city police will be holding a meeting with judicial officials of various courts to understand the laws related to technical evidences.
Closed circuits cameras are proving helpful for the police in prevention and detection of crimes. Several sensational kidnap cases, murder cases, and property offences were solved with the help of footage recorded by closed circuit cameras installed in the city recently.
The State government and other private entities are funding projects pertaining to installation of closed circuit cameras in and around the city.
Nevertheless, the police have now realised that the footage obtained from the closed circuit cameras do not stand as a strong technical evidence in the courts, as the officials themselves are not clear who has to issue an authentication certificate for the video footage.
The police will discuss various aspects pertaining technical evidence with the judicial officials to understand the laws. “Unless there is any clarity on the subject, it will be difficult to ensure convictions based on technical evidence, including footage recorded by the closed circuit cameras.
It will help the police in the long run as technical evidence, including call data records and visuals, recorded by mobile phones and closed circuit cameras would play a crucial role and serve as clinching evidence in the coming days,” another police official said.
