Pencil dislodged from skull of nine-year-old

March 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Hyderabad:

A team of neuro surgeons from Sai Krishna Neuro Hospital, Kacheguda, on Thursday claimed to have removed a pencil that had penetrated the skull of a nine-year-old girl. The pencil had gone almost 10 centimetres into the child’s skull, as a result of which she slipped into a coma.

The incident happened when the girl, Madhu Priya, while doing her homework, tripped and fell on the sharpened pencil.

A team of neurosurgeons comprising T.V. Srinivas, S. Jaypal Reddy, S.A. Jaleel Kirmani and T. Anil Kumar performed a craniotomy to remove the pencil, a news release said.

“The child since then has been recovering well and is due for discharge. This incident is an extremely rare form of injury and no attempt should be made to pull out these objects from the skull,” doctors advised.

Limb surgery

Surgeons of Krishna Instit-ute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) on Thursday said they had salvaged the right leg of a 55-year-old farmer which was badly deformed in an accident, a statement said.

Surgeons said Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) techn-ology was used to mend the damaged leg. TSF is a circular external metal frame that can fit around the limb and is usually attached to the bones through pins and struts.
