‘Only Left democratic unity can save country’

January 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - Hyderabad:

Developing Left and democratic unity was the need of the hour as it alone would save the country from the communal frenzy and anti-poor policies of the BJP-led NDA government, said Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. “BJP couldn’t be the alternative to Congress or vice versa. Both are two sides of the same coin. There is no difference in their class outlook,” he said.

Addressing a public meeting organised by the CPI (M) Telangana unit here on Tuesday, he criticised the Modi government for going back on its promises of controlling price rise, providing jobs and checking the agrarian crisis. Signs of unrest were already visible among people. Bank employees had organised a nation-wide strike while working class of different hues staged protest before the Parliament against the labour law amendment. “The protests are bound to increase in the days to come,” Mr. Sarkar remarked.

Mounting a scathing attack on the BJP government, he said during the first 100 days of its rule, 5,000 farmers committed suicide, 69,000 attempted suicide while two lakh farmers migrated to urban areas in search of jobs. Youth were greatly disappointed as the government was in no mood to fill 40 lakh vacancies in different departments.

Mr. Sarkar accused the Modi government of creating hurdles for his government in Tripura. Funds due under the 13{+t}{+h}Finance Commission were not being released and so were projects approved by the previous Congress government. “We did not bow to the Congress government and we will not do so to the Modi government either,” he asserted.
