Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has underscored the need for promoting power generation through non-conventional energy sources and wanted the officials concerned to put a proper plan in place towards this end.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that 1,758 MW solar power was available in the State at present against the target of 5,000 MW set by the Government.

He was interacting with TS Genco chairman and managing director D. Prabhakar Rao and Principal Secretary S. Narsing Rao on the solar power generation related issues in the State.

Mr. Prabhakar Rao told the Chief Minister that the Government had signed memorandum of understanding for generation of 2,000 MW solar power so far and it was proposed to ensure capacity addition of another 3,000 MW in the next couple of years.

The development comes in the light of the fact that the State which commenced its journey on June 2, 2014 with one MW solar power was able to reach generation capacity of over 1,700 MW.

This was mainly due to the solar power policy announced by the Government with emphasis on decentralisation in generation and distribution of solar energy. Mechanism was put in place giving permission to solar power plants based on the load on sub-stations which were linked with the solar plants to ensure that there was no effect on the grid.

The policy adopted by the Government would ensure that Telangana would be placed among the States generating maximum solar power in the coming years.
