With road infrastructure found wanting more often that not, city dwellers are used to being stuck in traffic gridlocks for long. But on Wednesday, most of them faced snarls for a different reason.
With a record number of couples tying the nuptial knot during the three-day auspicious period, almost every function hall in the city teemed with visitors.
No parking space
With most halls lacking parking space, visitors were forced to park their vehicles haphazardly on the roadsides, clogging thoroughfares. Areas like Secunderabad Cantonment, Uppal, Nagole, Dilsukhnagar, and Mehdipatnam among others felt the pinch.
And with people pouring into the city from neighbouring districts, traffic at the busy Uppal junction moved at snail’s pace for most part of the day.
To make matters worse, the ongoing civic works and narrow road space created traffic congestion in the morning, a police official said. He blamed the rise in traffic volumes on the presence of function halls at Nagole and surrounding areas.
Long serpentine lines at Parklane, Paradise, the Cantonment and surrounding areas during peak hours meant the situation in these areas was no better.
City outskirts like Champapet, Shamirpet, Rethibowli ring road, etc. too witnessed unusually high traffic with many function halls and gardens located in the area.
That the ASPRTC operated about 250 special buses to different districts from Mahatma Gandhi Bus station on Wednesday pointed to the marriage rush in the city.
