September 16, 2014 11:56 pm | Updated 11:56 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Overwhelming majority of the non-Manipuri students including the Telugus studying at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Imphal boycotted the Fresher’s day celebrations on the campus protesting attack against them.

Reports said despite appeals from the college director and the registrar, the non-Manipuri students stayed away from the celebrations seeking adequate security measures. They feared that many of them would be targeted by the locals as the media had highlighted their plight. Students said they had requested the authorities to deploy CRPF personnel on a permanent basis as there could be outbreak of violence again. On Tuesday, the situation was normal but students were reluctant to venture out of their hostels.
