Niloufer Hospital sacked a staff member on Friday after a video surfaced of a baby, hooked to an oxygen and intravenous line, being carried into emergency services.

The video shows a patient’s attender carrying an infant in her hand across the hospital’s buildings, with one of the staff towing the oxygen cylinder, raising questions over availability of stretchers and wheelchairs in the hospital.

‘No shortage’

Hospital Superintendent Ramesh Reddy said there is no shortage of stretchers and wheelchairs. “When asked, the employee said he used his discretion to move the baby. I have issued instructions to shift patients only on stretchers or wheelchairs,” he said.

The hospital administration started using the intensive care block which was inaugurated last November. The government sanctioned 140 security and sanitation staff for the building which also needs a few hundred nursing staff. The government has maintained that the hiring process will soon take place.
