MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday said that Muslims should not give in to a fear psychosis being created in the country. In an oblique reference to instant triple talaq being legislated, he sought to know what has changed in the community after the judgement.
Mr. Owaisi was addressing a gathering at the Jamaat-e-Islami city conference in Exhibition Grounds. Recounting the incidents of lynching across the country, he said, “Those who are killing Muslims in the name of an animal, you are weakening the foundation of this country. The Sangh Parivar will not rule this country forever, but you are undermining the country’s institutions. You are damaging the country.”.
He said that reform can be brought about only from within the community and cannot be imposed.
“The attacks on the Sharia is a big challenge. After the recent Supreme Court order many progressive minded people went on TV and said things. We want to ask them now: what major change has come after the order? Time and again the personal law board said ending evils in the society should be done by them. Legislation and orders will not work,” he said.
He said secular character, pluralism and composite culture of the country should be protected. Adopting a conciliatory approach, he said, “I am from a political party. There are others too and differences will be there. But we have to come together to stop those who are diving the community and country.”
