An elderly man ended up losing his eye when he underwent a hair transplant surgery in 2016 and the Telangana Medical Council suspended the doctor for two years last week.
According to the council’s order which was made on February 10, Dr. Mohammed Ishratullah Khan performed a hair transplant surgery on a diabetic, who later allegedly developed severe infection and gangrene, which in turn led to sepsis.
He was treated at a private hospital and survived the infection, but his right eyeball had to be removed due to damage. The patient was to undergo hair transplant procedure with 3,500 grafts, but after 2,800 grafts, he developed infections, the order reads.
The council also faulted the doctor for performing the surgery on a diabetic without taking expert opinion, given diabetics are at increased risk of infection post-surgery.
The order also stated that the doctor does not have recognised qualifications or special training to perform hair transplant procedures.
“The patient developed gas gangrene, which is a life-threatening condition. It was only because of very intensive care that he managed to survive the infection,” said council Chairman Dr. E. Ravinder Reddy.
Taking cognisance of the incident, the Telangana Medical Council ordered that Dr. Khan’s name be removed from the Medical Register for two years and he can only practice after he acquires necessary qualifications following the ban.
