Amid heavy police presence the sixth anniversary of the Mecca Masjid blast passed off without any untoward incident.
Nine persons died in the blast at Mecca Masjid, and another five were killed in the subsequent police firing on May 18, 2007.
Shops and commercial establishments remained open across Old City even as tourists thronged the historic Charminar and other destinations in large numbers. Around 200 people offered afternoon prayers at Mecca Masjid.
Police maintained tight vigil at all public places, and special pickets were posted in all sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
Police said pickets and patrolling would continue for a couple of days more.
Plea to State
Meanwhile, the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee-India on Saturday urged the government to provide compensation to the victims who died in bomb blast at Mecca Masjid and the subsequent police firing six years ago.
‘Government has failed on promises’
Committee general secretary Lateef Mohammed Khan said the government had made several promises in this regard but failed in keeping them.
He also urged the government to table the report of advocate Ravi Chander on torture of Muslim youths by the police and the report of Bhaskar Rao Commission on police firing at the masjid.
