Marriage procession turns tragic

May 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - HYDERABAD:

A joyous occasion in Golconda tuned into grief, when a horse carrying the groom kicked and fatally injured one of band members.

The deceased – Mohammed Madar of Aghapura – with his ‘marfa’ band of 12, was hired to entertain guests with the latest Bollywood hits, as the party moved with the groom riding a horse. The ‘baraat’ started around 9 p.m. on Friday.

“Half an hour later, the baraat stopped near Friend’s Cottage at Golconda and the troupe was performing. Madar was standing behind the horse on which the groom was seated. Suddenly, the animal kicked Madar on his chest. The man collapsed,” Inspector Golconda Syed Fayaz said.

Madar’s colleagues rushed him to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. “It is not clear how it happened. We are verifying different theories. A few persons are saying that the horse panicked due to bursting of crackers, while another version is the man went to pick currency notes from the ground when the animal landed the fatal blow,” the Inspector added.

Horse supplier Gaffar of Chudi bazaar had supplied six horses for the procession, along with a chariot. Madar was performing with the troupe for the last four years and was paid around Rs. 300 for a function. His relatives informed that he used to drive an auto-rickshaw during daytime for extra income.

Meanwhile, mild tension prevailed at the mortuary when relatives of the deceased opposed a post-mortem examination on the body.

They threatened the police and the mortuary staff, and tried to take the body away. After Afzalgunj police stepped in to pacify them, they relented.

The autopsy was performed in the evening and the body was handed over to the family.
