Do you know the Mac-Ids of your laptop? If not, better find out as it will help trace the laptop in case it is stolen or lost, thanks to a new, free of cost service launched by anti-virus company, Quick Heal.
Every laptop will have three Mac-Ids and the buyer would do well to know their details from the seller at the time of purchase or even later.
Laptop Tracker Service
Called the ‘Laptop Tracker Service', the technology developed by Quick Heal was already launched in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa and the four Southern States would be covered soon, the company's chairman & MD, Kailash Katkar and Vice-President (Corporate Communications) M.J. Srikant told reporters here on Tuesday.
Social responsibility
Stating that it was launched as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, they said the service could be availed of by anybody, irrespective of whether he/she was a user of Quick heal anti-virus.
They said the service would facilitate creation of a national data base for stolen/lost laptops and help law enforcement agencies to track them.
The owner of a laptop in case it is lost or stolen would have to register with Quick Heal on its website www.trackmylaptop.net for the service through the Mac-Ids.
To help police
The laptop tracker would help the cyber crime police to trace it on the basis of the Mac-Ids and IP address. Apart from helping trace a misplaced or stolen laptop, the service would also help, to some extent, the customer to find out when he/she buys a second-hand laptop whether it was stolen.
