There will be celebrations all over the State tomorrow marking completion of two years of Telangana State, but for over 50 families in Karimnagar district, it will be a struggle for justice.
They are all ‘victims’ of a suspended policeman Mohan Reddy of Karimnagar. For past eight months, they have been running from pillar to post seeking return of their property papers and money “illegally taken by the policeman” towards the loans he extended to them.
In another instance, a CID Inspector probing cases against Mohan Reddy was arrested by Karimnagar police for sending objectionable texts to a woman.
The victim in this case, incidentally, was Mohan Reddy’s close relative. All the police officers named by Mohan Reddy from Inspectors to Additional Superintendent of Police - were transferred after the accused ASI named them. But they were all given fresh postings.
Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma, however, on Tuesday said mere statement of an accused was not sufficient to punish a police officer. “We will not spare any police officer for corrupt practices,” he said replying to a question at a press conference in his office. These ASI’s victims apart, there are families demanding justice and truth behind the killing of five under-trial prisoners who were shot dead by police escort party while being taken from Warangal to Hyderabad court. The death of five prisoners, accused of involvement in terror cases, in April of 2015, raised many eyebrows as it was reported close on the heels of terror suspects shooting down two policemen in Nalgonda. Families of victims and civil liberties activists cried foul over the ‘encounter of prisoners’ while police officials stuck to their guns maintaining that escort party was forced to open fire after one prisoner tried to attack it
