Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kukatpally badly hit

Most lakes brimming water flowing on roads hamper traffic

It was the turn of the western side of Hyderabad this time to take the brunt of the heavy showers that drenched many parts of the city and inundated quite a few on Monday.

The high profile Jubilee Hills-Madhapur-Kukatpally corridor considered the IT and real estate hub of the city was not spared the flooding menace that has been stalking other parts since the beginning of this month.

A number of lakes, including Durgam Cheruvu in Jubilee Hills/Madhapur, Malkam Cheruvu at Serilingampally, Gopicheruvu in Madhapur, Saki Cheruvu in Ramachandrapuram and Kothacheruvu in Quthbullahpur, received flood water, but unable to contain them as they had already been filled to brim.

Storm water drains

The Miyapur-Bachupally road was overflowing with surplus water, which hampered the traffic for hours, and caused immense hardship for the late night commuters.

Zonal Commissioner D. Hari Chandana said, almost all the 75 lakes of the West Zone were filled to the brim due to the rains for the past two months.

“The flood water had flown backwards in the storm water channels as the lakes were too full to accept them, due to which roads and junctions were inundated,” Ms.Hari Chandana said.

The junctions at University of Hyderabad and BHEL were inundated, and so were colonies such as Deeptisri Nagar, and Allwyn Colony near Kukatpally, Allahpur, Gayatri Nagar and Sardar Nagar in Borabanda among others.

Plastic waste

Ms. Hari Chandana attributed the flooding majorly to clogged storm water drains and encroached channels. Construction debris was being dumped in the drains, so was plastic waste, she said. Maintenance of the drains was not effective as the areas were merged with GHMC recently, she added.

Junctions were being de-watered through the use of pump-sets, and drains were being cleared of blocks, she informed.

GHMC is apparently planning to acquire a jetting machine for each ward of the zones except Central Zone, so that the storm water drains may be kept free of silt and debris.

Pumping water

Meanwhile, residents of Ramanthapur, Malkajgiri and Nacharam had to face flooding blues again, after Monday’s rain. East Zone officials informed that pump-sets of 300 HP capacity were being employed to drain the water from colonies surrounding Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu.

The water thus cleared is being pumped to Ramanthapur Chinna Cheruvu, from where pump-sets will have to be used again to drain it to Musi River.

Meanwhile, continual downpours in Miralam area have flooded the Nehru Zoological Park partially, with the flood water from Miralam Tank gushing into the zoo. Apart from Tiger and Lion Safari Park, the roads in front of Safari, Hyena and Lion enclosures too were flooded, Curator Shivani Dogra informed.
