Hyderabad city has plummeted further in the Swachh Survekshan, 2018, rankings, even as it has outdone its metropolitan counterparts Chennai and Bengaluru from neighbouring states.

The survey, an initiative under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, to rank cities as per their sanitation standards, has awarded 27th rank to Greater Hyderabad among cities with over one lakh population. Chennai finished last in the top 100 among a total of 500 cities, while there is no trace of Bengaluru.

This is a step down for the city which had stood 22nd in previous year’s survey of 434 urban local bodies, and 19th among 73 cities surveyed in 2016.

The city has finished lower than Vijayawada, Tirupathi and Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh, which stood at fifth, sixth and seventh places.

Indore, Bhopal and Chandigarh secured the first three ranks respectively.

Warangal at 31st rank, Suryapet at 45th, and Karimnagar at 73rd rank are the three cities from Telangana which found place in the top 100, while Telangana as a State has stood at seventh place edged out by Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim in that order.

As was announced earlier, Hyderabad has bagged the national award in the category of ‘India’s Best State Capital/Union Territory in Solid Waste Management’.
