A Division bench of the Hyderabad High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice P. Naveen Rao on Tuesday expressed distress at the failure of the officers of the AP and Telangana states to oversee the deposit of wages into bank accounts of migrant workers in brick kilns.
The bench on an earlier occasion directed that owners of the brick kilns would have to deposit monthly wages into bank accounts and this would reduce exploitation of migrant workers.
It may be recalled that the case was remitted from Supreme Court. The apex court was told about the plight of migrant workers in brick kilns in Odisha, AP and Telangana.
The bench here took initiative to ensure that bank accounts were opened by workers so that the wages could be deposited.
On Tuesday it was noticed that only some owners had complied with this direction. The bench said that it was the duty of the officers to ensure that the direction was complied with in letter and spirit. The bench wanted the officers to act against erring owners. While adjourning the matter to July 4 for further hearing, the bench directed the two governments to submit action-taken reports in the case.
