Will marksman Gagan Narang get a chance to emulate in shooting what Pullela Gopi Chand is doing in badminton? It all depends on how the new Telangana Government responds to the 31-year-old Olympic bronze medallist’s long-pending proposal to set up an academy at the Gachibowli shooting range on the premises of the University of Hyderabad here.
Narang had put forward the proposal after his successful outing at the London Olympics in 2012. His idea was to facilitate training and exposure, besides taking care of performing talent and arranging for sponsorship, with the long-term objective of producing champions in the sport.
But indifference by the previous Government effectively put the whole subject on the rack.
Having won his first silver in Prone shooting (he competed in the event for the first time because of a slipped disc) in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Narang is still ready to take up his “dream project” in his hometown Hyderabad.
“It all depends on how things evolve. From my side, I am yet to get a positive response. It is a pretty simple proposal,” he reiterated.
