Thieves took away gold ornaments weighing 3.5 kilograms from the car of a jeweller on Sunday evening, when he stopped his vehicle to replace its flat tyre at Kukatpally.

Abhishek Agarwal of Yashsree Jewellery in Basheerbagh went to Malabar Gold’s branch at Chandanagar to show new models of ornaments. While returning home, he stopped at VV Kaman near Nexa showroom in Kukatpally as the rear left tyre was wobbling.

Upon getting down from the car, he and his assistant, Ashish, noticed the flat tyre and got it replaced with the stepney.

Bag missing

A few minutes later, Mr. Agarwal realised that the bag containing ₹70 lakh worth of jewellery was missing from the front seat. “The shocked jeweller frantically searched the car. Realising that some one made off with the ornaments while he was changing the tyre, he approached us,” Kukatpally Inspector K. Purushotham said on Monday.

Police suspect that someone having information that Mr. Agarwal was carrying huge quantity of gold jewellery, must have stalked him.

Video footage recorded by the surveillance camera where the offence was committed showed a group of people, including an unidentified woman, moving past the car closely, the police officer said.

“It was not a theft committed by chance. Either someone must have been closely following Mr. Agarwal for some time or kept a tab on his movement,” a police officer said.
