May 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Having received proposals for an estimated cost of Rs.729 crore during the Swachh Hyderabad initiative for improvement of amenities in the city and outskirts, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to start according required sanctions in the next three days.

As part of the Swachh Hyderabad programme, the civic body received a total of 8,562 proposals for improvement of amenities with works related to roads, storm water drains, parks and playgrounds, drainage network and water supply. These were the proposals made by the designated Swachh units in coordination with local residents and officials.

GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer Somesh Kumar described the response to Swachh Hyderabad drive as overwhelming on part of the citizens and said though the initiative which started on May 16 officially concluded on May 20, many teams were still actively visiting the assigned areas.

“Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao visited his area on Sunday and interacted with the residents,” he said.

The process of sifting through the proposals received so far has commenced and they were being listed out and prioritised. “For the initiative, the city was divided into 400 units and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has announced Rs.50 lakh to each unit for taking up development works,” Mr. Somesh Kumar.

Where works cross the announced amount in a given unit, more would be provided based on the need.

The proposals received include works on compound walls, managing electricity wires hanging precariously in residential areas apart from roads and drains.

With the scrutiny expected to be completed by Tuesday, the GHMC plans to start issuing sanctions for taking up identified works immediately.
