GHMC plans plastic-free zone in Old City

April 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - HYDERABAD:

In what appears to be an extraordinary task to accomplish, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to make the Charminar-Falaknuma stretch a plastic-free zone soon.

For this, the officials plan to partner with different stakeholders like shopkeepers’ associations, hawkers’ unions and local Non-Governmental Organisations to ensure that plastic is not strewn on the roads. “Initially, we will conduct awareness programmes for hawkers and shopkeepers because a lot of plastic waste is thrown on the roads by them,” GHMC Commissioner (South) B.S. Reddy said. Banners highlighting health hazards of plastic will be put up across the stretch.
