The GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) has projected a budget of ₹5,643 crore for the year 2017-18. The allocation for the revenue expenditure, which includes salaries of employees, is ₹2,616. 27 crore and the capital expenditure which will go towards infrastructure projects is ₹3,026.73 crore. The upcoming financial year’s budget is only ₹43 crore more than the current year.
The budget was approved in the council on Saturday after the standing committee made some recommendations to the draft budget in December last year. Without changing the budget size, the allotments for burial grounds, graveyards and crematoriums and heritage conservation were increased in the final budget while lesser funds were earmarked for construction of community buildings. Post the ₹1,000 crore allocation by the State Government for development of roads and Musi river front, GHMC will also take up infrastructure works for bridges, water supply, sewerage, public transport, storm water drains, street lights and slum improvement.
Coming to the revenue streams, the city’s civic body has set a target of ₹1,286 crore through property tax collection and ₹962.79 through user charges and fees.
Delivering his speech during the budget in the council hall, Mayor B. Rammohan said that they will strive for providing better amenities to the citizens. He said that focus on Swachh Hyderabad, construction of double bedroom houses, ₹5 meal scheme centres and improving the storm water drains network in the upcoming year.
