Fund transfer fraud busted, 10 Nigerians nabbed

Rachakonda Police busted a fraud involving Nigerians who were duping people across the country of big amounts of money.

The fraud came to light after the police arrested 10 Nigerians from New Delhi based on a complaint from a city-based nurse. According to the police, the complainant befriended a man named Augustin Williams on social media after she was told he is a pastor in Ireland, last November. After establish a rapport with the nurse over the next few months, the man told her he would send her $ 50,000, and few other valuables through courier.

The complainant later received a call from within India from another man who claimed to be calling from customs office in New Delhi airport. A demand was made for deposit of a ‘registration fee’ of Rs. 27,500. Subsequently, numerous demands were made over the next months for money citing various procedural formalities to send the courier. By the complainant approached the police, the complainant had already paid Rs. 9.37 lakh.

The police used the electronic data available to zero in on a hideout in south-west New Delhi. A raid at the hideout revealed that 10 Nigerians were behind the fraud and had cheated several people across the country.
