D.S. Reddy, the longest-serving Vice-Chancellor

D.S. Reddy had one of the longest tenures as Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University at a time when it passed through some of the most troubled times. He was the V-C between 1957 and 1969 when the university was one of the leading institutions in the country.

Mr. Reddy managed to successfully organise the golden jubilee of the university. When his term as the V-C was sought to be cut short by amending the Osmania University Act in 1966, Mr. Reddy managed to appeal successfully in the Supreme Court. He managed to argue that cutting short the term of V-C from five years to three years would be interference in the affairs of an autonomous university and also a sign of discrimination as other officials were not similarly affected.

It was during his tenure that a host of luminaries passed through the ports of the Osmania University, including Yuri Gagarin, Sarvepalli Radhakrishna, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, Mukarram Jah, Morarji Desai among others.

Mr. Reddy’s tenure ended in April 1969.
