Doctor injects herself with poison, dies

A doctor pursuing a diploma course at the Railway Hospital in Lalaguda ended her life after administering herself saline laced with anaesthesia and poison at her house in Mahindra Hills under the Tukaramgate police station limits on Saturday night.

Shailaja Sharma (31) hailing from Bathinda in Punjab was pursuing Diploma of National Board in Ophthalmology since 2012.

She had appeared for the exams in December last but did not fare well and was preparing to appear again this month. She allegedly injected poison and anaesthesia into the saline bottle and administered it to herself.

A suicide note, purportedly written by Shailaja, was recovered from her house.

The letter which she stated that she was unable to remember what she had studied.

“Unable to cope with this, I decided to end my life,” she wrote in the suicide note, said Tukaramgate Sub-Inspector K. Shyam. Her domestic help opened the main door that was found ajar on Sunday morning and found her lying dead.

She immediately informed the house owner who alerted the police. “We will conduct the autopsy at Gandhi Hospital mortuary after the arrival of her family members on Monday,” Mr. Shyam said.
