The Irrigation Department has decided to conduct a workshop for its engineers on the design and erection of gates of various barrages under construction in the State as they need understanding on the critical aspect in projects.

Minister for Irrigation T. Harish Rao held a review meeting here on Monday with Special Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi, Engineers-in-Chief C. Muralidhar and B. Nagendra Rao, expert in project gates designing Satyanarayana and expert in erection of gates Kannam Naidu and others on the fixing of gates for various barrages under construction.

The meeting discussed in detail about fabrication and erection of gates for Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla, Thupakulagudem, Sadarmatt, Chankha-Korata and others. Officials stated that fabrication of gates for Mid Manair project was already completed and their erection was under way.

Mr. Kannam Naidu, who acted as dam designs chief and consultant to Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat in the past, suggested that the engineers be scrupulous in checking the details of fabrication, transportations and erection. Even the aspects such as welding had to be looked into carefully since there were instances of gates getting damaged within a short time even for minor deviations in the welding work.

Further, he suggested ultrasonic scanning to test the quality of welding in tune with the designs at the fabrication site as even 1 mm deviation could create problems.
