Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao has made yet another fervent appeal to the Central government urging it to part with 100 acres of land belonging to the Defence Ministry for construction of sky-ways.

Criticising the Defence Ministry for citing improbable conditions to give up land, Mr. K.T. Rama Rao said the State government had expressed willingness to allot 600 acres of land at Shamirpet in lieu of the 100 acres. However, in the latest communication, the Ministry had sought ₹30 crore compensation per annum for the loss of property tax collection had there been built up structures on the land forgone.

The State government is ready with designs of the two sky-ways between Shamirpet and Turkapalli and Patny and Suchitra Junction respectively, and ₹2,500 crore have been earmarked for the same to be developed by HMDA.

The Minister spoke after launching the Medchal interchange of Nehru Outer Ring Road at Kandlakoi, and the Toll Administrative Buildings here on Tuesday, and urged MP Ch. Malla Reddy to raise this issue at the upcoming meeting with the Defence Estate Officers.

He said the government will make all out efforts to take the best leverage of the ORR, by developing the required infrastructure. Townships will be developed around the ORR by emulating the successful Uppal Bagayat land pooling model, and the Ring Main of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board will circle along the 158 kilometre stretch to bring the Krishna and Godavari water to every part of the city.

The ORR is an asset to the Telangana, which will facilitate easy transport between any two places in Hyderabad, and between districts bypassing the city. Efforts are being made to set up trauma care centres in all the 19 Toll Administrative Buildings on the ORR, as also the command control centres to monitor the speeds through Highway Traffic Management Systems. LED lighting is being installed all along the ORR, and the 35 radial roads will be completed as planned, Mr. Rama Rao assured.

The proposal of 332-kilometre Regional Ring Road too will become a reality after laying of foundation by Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari.

He appreciated the HMDA for taking up ₹1,750 crore works for city development, and felicitated its staff.

The 1.1-km long interchange in the shape of double trumpet is useful for traffic arriving from/exiting to Nagpur, Patancheru, Pedda Amberpet and the city. Though the rest of the ORR is long complete, this stretch could not be taken up owing to a case of land acquisition pending in Supreme Court. The government could begin the work after getting the stay vacated, officials informed.

Minister for Transport P. Mahender Reddy, MP Ch.Malla Reddy, MLA Sudhir Reddy, MLC Shambhipur Raju, Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan, HMDA Commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu and others were present at the event.
