Protesting against the closure of the stretch between Sardar Mahal and Charminar for traffic, residents and shopkeepers on Tuesday stalled the granite floor laying works being undertaken by the GHMC as part of the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP).
As part of the works, the contractor began to build a granite wall to close down the road for traffic and take up the works. However, a large number of people gathered at the spot and stalled the construction work. They complained that in the past when the road was closed for pipeline laying works they were in trouble for about four months.
“We had to face a lot of problem when it was closed down for pipeline laying works about six months ago. There is no alternative route and senior citizens and children are forced to walk for a long distance,” complained Naveed, a local resident.
Residents were also angry over the failure of the officials in conducting any coordination meeting.
They criticised the authorities for undertaking the granite flooring works without informing them even though they are going to be affected.
No parking place
“We have cars and scooters and parking them will be a major problem if the road is closed. Let the authorities first resolve our problems and then take up the works,” lamented a shop keeper.
Later, the residents headed to the nearby GHMC office and brought their grievances to notice of the Zonal Commissioner South (GHMC), N. Ravi Kiran, who spoke to the officials concerned and instructed them to resolve the issues of the people and then take up the works.
