Congress leaders petition President on defections

July 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - HYDERABAD:

A 50-member delegation of Congress leaders led by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy called on President Pranab Mukherjee to complain about the violation of anti-defection law and constitutional crisis in Telangana.

The Congress leaders in the three-page memorandum said due to the limitations imposed by the federal structure, they had no choice but to approach the head of the country and the chief custodian of the Constitution to intervene and direct the Telangana Speaker to implement anti-defection law.

The TPCC president said during the general elections, the TRS won only 63 seats and subsequently, it indulged in threatening and bribing the other party MLAs and MLCs to join their party. He pointed out that the height of violation of anti-defection law was to induct Talasani Srinivas Yadav into the Cabinet. The Congress delegation stated that the State Governor had refused to approve the appointments of RTI Commissioners made by the then Congress government on the grounds that the recommended candidates had not complied with the required standards and qualifications. They wondered what prevented the Governor from taking similar action.

They charged that the Speaker too had disregarded their constitutional duties and responsibilities and failed to take appropriate action that resulted in a severe constitutional crisis.

Among others, the TPCC working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, CLP leader K.Jana Reddy, Leader of Opposition in Council Md. Ali Shabbir and others were present.
