In a bid to ensure that this year’s Ganesh festivities were eco-friendly, the GHMC has taken the initiative to distribute close to two lakh clay idols to the citizens and different organisations through various functions held across the twin cities with the help of corporators and others.
Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy has also appealed to the general public and the Ganesh pandal organisers to ensure that plastic usage is minimised and the waste is segregated into dry and wet by putting them into separate bins enabling the civic body to clean up the city quickly. Saplings have also been distributed along with the clay idols, he said.
Mayor B. Rammohan on Thursday went round the 70-acre Indira Park to check the progress of rejuvenation of the water body inside the sprawling park, also the home to more than 2000 trees and wide variety of birds. Over the last few months, municipal authorities had ensured the pond bed was dredged and the obstacles towards free flow of water into the water body was removed. The Mayor had sought modern boats and better upkeep of the surroundings.
The civic body has appealed to citizens to donate unused books at its newly launched ‘wall of kindness’ at the JNTU Masab Tank bus stop. These books will be donated to deserving students, said a press release.
