They are denied employment and are looked down upon by the society. With no other go, members of transgender community seek alms and many become sex workers, all for survival.
But things are poised to change as the State Prisons Department has been planning to provide gainful employment to them at five petrol bunks that would commence soon.
The objective is to provide them a chance to earn, so that they need not depend on anyone for leading a decent life.
Five exclusive petrol pumps operated by the transgender would be among 100 petrol pumps, which would be operated by the department across the State by this year-end.
Announcing this at a media conference here on Friday, V.K. Singh, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, said the department intends to provide rehabilitation and employment to the transgender community in the city.
Further, Mr. Singh said the Prisons Department was the best performing one in the State on all fronts and has achieved all targets the it set for itself in the last three years. “We will open 1,000 village outlets to sell jail products,” he said.
