Starting January next year, Class X students in government schools in the City will have more study hours than the usual seven. To improve SSC pass percentage, district administration has decided to give special coaching for students for an additional two hours during the day.
Students will also be coached in special classes in subjects including Math, Science and Social Sciences. Those who had not performed well in half-yearly examinations will be given special attention. District Collector Yogita Rana ordered the district education officer to make teachers regularly conduct class tests.
“Students will be rewarded for improvement in their examination scores. Teachers are also expected to keep a score card of each student’s marks,” Ms. Rana told The Hindu .
For almost a decade the district has been performing poorly in SSC examinations, scoring the either the lowest or the second lowest pass percentage. “Our education officials are committed to improving students’ performance,” she added.
Private schools
Mushrooming private educational institutions which do not offer students proper education even after charging exorbitant fee structure will be monitored by the District Educational Officer. Pass percentage of private schools have been dipping constantly in Hyderabad, though the number of schools have increased during the last decade. Residential schools in the district have been consistently performing better than private and other government schools, officials have noted.
In 2016, Hyderabad had figured at the bottom of all districts scoring 76.23 % when compared to Warangal district which had 95.13 % pass.
Weak students
District education officials said that, schools which register their students as private candidates for SSC examination will be checked this time.
In SSC-2017 over a dozen schools were found to have registered their weak students and private candidates in order to avoid flak from authorities.
Schools which do not give special coaching for students with learning disabilities or physical challenges will also be penalised.
