With weather conditions conducive for heatwave in the State, the city recorded 42.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the second highest recording for April since 2010. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of heatwave conditions for Sunday, with temperatures exceeding the normal level by two to four degrees Celsius. The temperature in Hyderabad alone increased by nearly one degree Celsius on Sunday over that of Saturday’s maximum recording.
Meanwhile, higher temperatures were recorded in other parts of the State. Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar and Adilabad recorded 44 degrees Celsius while 43 degrees Celsius was recorded in Ramagundam, Nalgonda and Medak. Maximum temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius was recorded in all the districts as the IMD warned of heatwave conditions for Monday as well.
The heatwave in 2015 was believed to have killed over a thousand people in Telangana though the official toll count was much lower. The State government had issued guidelines to beat the heat, including avoiding exposure to extreme heat and recognising the symptoms of heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion
Doctors at the city’s government hospitals see cases of heat exhaustion trickling while practitioners admit to treating patients due to heat sickness. At Fever Hospital in Hyderabad, one patient was admitted with symptoms of heat exhaustion on Saturday.
Though cyclone Maarutha, that is expected to hit Myanmar, is likely to bring some rainfall along coastal Odisha, it will bring little relief to peninsular India.
