CBI JD’s deputation to State ends on June 14

June 01, 2013 12:28 am | Updated 12:28 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The deputation to Andhra Pradesh of V. V. Lakshminarayana to head the Central Bureau of Investigation unit here will end on June 14. He was earlier Deputy Inspector General and is now Joint Director in the rank of Inspector General.

Mr. Lakshminarayana will complete the maximum of seven years of deputation allowed to Central government officials on that day but it remained to be seen whether his term would be extended under “extraordinary” circumstances in view of the sensitive cases handled by the investigating agency under his stewardship, sources said.

They added that nothing of the sort, however, was indicated by the CBI headquarters so far.

Mr. Lakshminarayana will be repatriated to his cadre State, Maharashtra, after being relieved from here. The Director-General of Police of Maharashtra even contacted him to enquire where he would like to get posted but Mr. Lakshminarayana did not indicate any preference and offered to work anywhere, the sources added.

Past instances

They also said there were two instances in the past when the Supreme Court ordered extension of term of CBI officers who completed seven years of deputation as they were involved in investigation of scams.

This was one scenario whereby Mr. Lakshminarayana could be retained here and the other was the CBI Director asking him to stay back for some more time since the apex court had directed the agency to complete probe into the assets case of Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in four months.
