A shooting sequence in a television serial took a bizarre turn after an actor allegedly lost control of a car and ran over a five-year-old boy, killing him on the spot, and injured another girl, at Ashoknagar in Chandanagar here on Friday.

Aparna, a.k.a. Archana, was supposed to drive up to the park, get out of the car and walk into the garden. She apparently lost control of the vehicle and, instead of stopping, drove on ahead. “She [might] have stepped on the accelerator instead of applying [the] brakes, and the car raced ahead,” Madhapur ACP K. Goverdhan Reddy said.

The boy, E. Satvik Reddy, an LKG student, and a girl from the colony, Sathvika (9), were sitting on the steps by the pavement near the garden’s entry point. The runaway car climbed on to the pavement, crushing Satvik Reddy against the concrete steps. The girl suffered a fracture on her leg. Satvik’s father, Srinivas Reddy, is a security guard. The children were unaware of the shooting of the serial and had been playing in the garden.

Police said Aparna did not have a driving licence and the crew had no permission for the shooting. Cases were booked against the actor, Indrani serial director Sharat, producer Vinod, manager Venkateswara Rao under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt) of the IPC. Aparna and Rao have been arrested.
