It was a nostalgic evening here on Tuesday at the Taj Deccan hotel, when noted collector of Indian art Jagdish Mittal took the audience through history, explaining the relevance of the scrolls he had collected and compiled into a book titled Deccani Scroll Paintings .
The book, which is a comprehensive study of all aspects of the unique tradition of narrative scroll paintings in India, was unveiled by chief guest Banoo Parpia, Director for International Development, Cornell University.
Naozar Chenoy, Trustee Secretary, Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art, recalled how Mr. Mittal would always find out everything about an artwork he collected in the past.
“Kamla Mittal also made many sacrifices. Also, many of their artworks were not in good condition, as they would have things like paper, gum and tape stuck on them. Kamla would take them all out one by one,” he said.
Ms. Parpia said Mr. Mittal’s book had identified important paintings of the history of the region, which had not yet come to the notice of many.
