Driving licence, commonly carried to steer clear of trouble during police checks, may not be useful in case of emergencies what with the blood group column being left blank.
Transport officials admit that they do not ask licence applicants for their blood group since the information is ‘optional’.
A year ago when Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh E.S.L. Narasimhan visited the Khairtabad RTA office for renewal of his driving license, he pointed out the blank column and asked officials to make it mandatory, says Telangana Auto and Motors Vehicles Welfare Association general secretary M. Dayanand.
“I don’t know why they are not taking the Governor’s words seriously,” he says, adding that it is being followed in other States.
Joint Transport Commissioner C. Ramesh said if the applicant wants information about his/her blood group to be noted in the licence, it can be done.
“It was made optional in the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 itself,” he said.
