Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi will continue to be in the hearts of the people despite the best efforts of the BJP-led NDA government to marginalise her contributions to the country.

Mr. Reddy, who was speaking at birth centenary celebrations of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, accused the BJP-led NDA government of distorting history to marginalise the contributions of Nehru-Gandhi family to the country. Such tactics will not work and people of this country will never forget her. He asked the Congress party's cadre to play an active role in enlightening the masses about the contribution of Nehru-Gandhi family.

Welfare oriented

He said said it was during Indira Gandhi’s regime that India began its journey to become a super power as she dealt with enemies with an iron hand and at the same time ensured that the country became food-surplus and industrial growth was at the top pace. Empowerment of weaker sections and welfare of poor was on the top of her agenda, he said.

Earlier, senior leaders, including Rajya Sabha members KVP Ramchander Rao and M.A. Khan, ex-PCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Leader of Opposition in Council Shabbir Ali, former ministers Danam Nagender and D. Sridhar Babu, ex-MP M. Anjan Kumar Yadav and TPCC treasurer Gudur Narayan Reddy, paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi at her statue on the Necklace Road.

Former Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy cut a cake to launch the celebrations at Tarnaka in the presence of State Mahila Congress president Sharada, TPCC secretary Banda Chandra Reddy and senior leaders like Krishna Kumar Goud. She recalled how the nationalisation of banks by Indira Gandhi changed the economic situation in the country and how massive schemes were launched. for poor after her ‘Garibi Hatao’ call.Across State The celebrations were held across Telangana on a grand scale with the participation of senior leaders in their respective districts. The party’s flag was hoisted in more than 5,000 Gram Panchayats and over 60 municipalities across the State. Floral tributes were paid to Indira Gandhi at her statues at all places in Telangana State. The occasion was also marked with blood donation camps, distribution of rice and sarees among poor and other welfare activities organised by the Congress leaders in all 31 districts of Telangana.
