Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Tuesday invited AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi to visit Telangana and call on the families of several farmers who ended their lives due to mounting debts and acute drought conditions.
In wake of the Congress party launching a drive to expose the NDA and State governments for failing to come to the rescue of the farming community, the TPCC leader during his meeting with Mr. Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi said it was time he paid a visit to the families of the deceased farmers. “I met him and made a formal request to visit Telangana as the farmers are in dire straits,” he told The Hindu from New Delhi. Mr. Bhatti said Mr. Gandhi has not yet confirmed the dates, but in consultation with other State leaders his itinerary would be decided.
The TPCC working president discussed the party affairs in Telangana and proposed that Congress could be strengthened at the grassroots level by constituting at least nine separate committees of the frontal organisations.
“I suggested that we can have mahila, youth, student, SC/ST/OBC and farmers committees at the village level to involve more people,” he said pointing that that would generate more than 5 lakh additional party members. “At least 5 lakh plus members can be appointed as village unit presidents and they will in turn appoint five members each,” he remarked.
Mr. Bhatti noted that there are 10,761 revenue villages, 464 mandals and 1,862 wards/divisions in municipalities and corporations. “In all 4,84,245 presidents for frontal organisations can be appointed at the village level while another 16,758 presidents would be named for ward/division level committees,” he said.
